p4k16 no41: Huerco S. – For Those Of You Who Have Never (And Also Those Who Have)

Had I ever heard of them before: nope.

Reductive First Impression: Honestly when it started I was oh yeah Selected Ambient Works/ William Basinski blah blah and by the time it finished I wanted to listen to it all again.

It’s good but I don’t know how good yet.

Will I listen to it again: yes.

p4k16 no42: Vince Staples – Prima Donna

Had I ever heard of them before: I think so.

Reductive First Impression: The first one of these albums I actually liked. There’s a real sense of forward motion here and a diversity of production (hello iphone) that’s unlike the oppressive atmosphere of the other hip hop albums so far.

Plus it’s short. Twenty minutes. Real bonus.

Will I listen to it again: mayhaps. Wouldn’t turn it off, for sure.

p4k16 no43: Weyes Blood – Front Row Seat to Earth

Had I ever heard of them before: nope.

Reductive First Impression: oooh pretty arpeggios. Arpeggios always remind me of the Dizzy the Egg games.

Track 4 sounds like Nico singing the Red House Painters which I enjoy. I feel like I should like this more than I do.

It’s growing on me – even though (especially) as it’s all a bit McCartney.

Will I listen to it again: maybe?

p4k16 no 44: Kevin Gates – Islah

Had I ever heard of them before: nope.

Reductive First Impression: hmmm seems to manage to be dense and sparse at the same time. First track I quite enjoy. Let’s see if it lasts.

Oooof its 63 minutes long….

I mean it kind of has that half laid back/slightly desperate drawl that Drake has. I dunno, I’m half picking up the lyrics.

Will I listen to it again: na, it’s not that it’s boring but I’m not bothered.

p4k16 no 45: William Tyler – Modern Country

Had I ever heard of them before: nope.

Reductive First Impression: sounds like Brian Eno made a proggy ambient country album. I’m pretty sure that’s a fretless bass in there too.

At first I was like, “cool, only 7 tracks!” but then I realised this is Mike Oldfield’s country album. Guuuuuuh. Who actually likes this? I mean actively likes this – it wouldn’t kill me to have on in the background but….

Successfully answers the question, “what if John Fahey sucked?”

Will I listen to it again: God, no.

p4k16 no 46: Pinegrove – Cardinal

Had I ever heard of them before: nope.

Reductive First Impression: ooh folksy roots rock. huh, kinda wuss emo with it too. I might have liked this when I was 18. Just don’t have the patience anymore. you know an album’s good when it’s 30 mins long and you go – oh man another 10 minutes.

One song sounds like Broken Social Scene. Apparently lots of people get the band’s logo tattooed on them. Makes sense. I dub thee The Broken Brighteyed Death Cab For Grouplove Scene.

Will I listen to it again: no.

p4k16 no 47: Kamaiyah – A Good Night in the Ghetto

Had I ever heard of them before: nope.

Reductive First Impression: upbeat – her rapping style doesn’t sound narcotised wrist slitting stuff like ummm 21 Savage. The backing is synthetic in an unappealing way to me – I like things to either sound real or really affected not obvious computer generated.
Not really into hearing about people partying any more.

Freaky freaky freaky freaks is a good chorus though.

Will I listen to it again: nope.
